Many dog owners are new dog owners and have not raised dogs before. Here are the four basic principles of dog feeding:
A puppy is required to eat 80% full only
Many dog owners did not raise dogs before and they are always afraid that their dogs didn’t eat enough, so they always feed a full bowl of dog food for every meal. This is actually very wrong because dogs eat at 70 to 80% full already enough, do not overdose.
In simple terms: After the dog finish eating, let it lick the bowls for the finishing food. If the dog is really reluctant to leave the bowl after a meal, you can add a little bit more, but make sure the amount is right.
Different stages of puppy, eat different dog food
Dog owners must not mess with dog food for different stages. For the purpose of saving money or saving time, some dog owners will buy the big/adult dog food for their puppy. Aside from not enough nutrition for the puppies, it is also very hard to digest and causing diseases happen. (Note: half of the dog food plus half of the human meal is a bad feeding habit.)
In general, a puppy drink mother’s milk at the time it is born; after weaned, you can start feeding it with liquid food, or the baby food after heated and softened. Or use a special goat milk powder to make it more nutritious, such as puppies’ milk replacer as the ingredients is closer to the dog mother’s milk, and it is more natural as well.
Gradually change the dog food
When you want to change food for dogs, don’t change them all at once. Each time you blend in half of the new food, try two or three days and gradually increase the portion, and completely change to new ones only after 7-10 days. This is to make sure the dog’s digestive system can adapt to it, otherwise it is easy to cause diarrheal. When feeding, be sure to give plenty of water at the same time. (Not required to use mineral water or distilled water, use ordinary drinking water is sufficient).
Dog food is mainly supplemented by snacks
When dog owners are feeding their puppies daily, the main food should be dog food. Nowadays, the commercial dog foods are very nutritious, either palatability or nutritional are quite balance. In general, dogs should be fed with dog food daily. Occasionally, the dog’s owner can also prepare some meals for the dog, but make sure it is less oil, less salt and less sugar, otherwise these will be unfavourable to the dog’s health.
Snacks should be eaten less by dogs as it is mainly used for the rewards during the dog’s training. Otherwise, the dogs will be rejected to eat the usual dog foods. Aside from that, desserts such as chewing gum, ice cream, and cakes are not recommended. All these can easily lead to tooth decay, obesity, and stomach discomfort. At the same time after eating more sweet, it is very easy to cause dogs to lose their appetite for others dog’s food.
- There are some dogs feel that they always eat enough without heavy activity and having improper excretion. In this case, it may be really sick and best to seek for a veterinarian.
- Once the puppies are eaten full, immediate vigorous exercise can cause to indigestion, and followed by diarrheal and vomiting. The dog owners must be take note to not play with the dog immediately after their meal.
